Frequently Asked Questions

What level of kayak experience is recommended?

Paddle Share is an independent adventure on a large river. We strongly recommend that Paddle Share users have previous kayak experience, preferably on a river. Although you’re traveling with the current, you need to be a strong paddler to maneuver in a flowing river and avoid hazards.

Less experienced paddlers may chose to rent a double kayak and go with a more experienced paddler.

The Pickerel Lake Station is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a more predictable paddle.

Check out the Paddle With A Ranger program (June-September) at Pickerel Lake to get paddling instruction from a National Park Service ranger.

How do I get back to where I started?

Each route is different! Please see each route description for a sample itinerary. Paddle Share routes begin at an upstream location and conclude at the respective downstream station. Paddle with a friend! Leave a car at the finish and ride together to the start. At the end, have your friend drive back to the vehicle left at the start. Similarly, you can lock a bike at the downstream location, drive to the upstream location, and then use your bike to get back to your car. (Paddle Share is not responsible for lost or stolen items). Other options MetroTransit, Run / walk, and rideshare or micro mobility services like Bird, Lyft, and Lime. Note that Metro Transit may not be available at every station.

How do I know if Paddle Share is closed?

First, check our most recent posts on Twitter. We will update if we close Paddle Share.

Weather closures are most frequently related to high river flow and severe weather. Check the river flow at Anoka. If it is greater than 25,000 CFS (cubic feet per second), Paddle Share is closed.

Check the weather to see if lightning is forecasted. If you hear thunder or see lightning, do not kayak! Paddle Share will be closed, and refund requests will be honored. Lastly, call 844-694-6489 if you are unsure of the status.

If I need help on the river, who do I call?

In an emergency situation, call 911. Paddle to shore and describe your location. The map in the boat can help describe river miles and notable features. In a non-emergency situation, a Paddle Share representative will be able to assist you with questions about the stations and equipment at 844-694-6489.
